Personal Information

We do not automatically gather any personal information from you, such as your name, phone number, e-mail or address. This information is only obtained if you supply it voluntarily.

Registration forms on our site do require users to provide contact information, demographic information for statistical profiles and unique identifiers (for use as account numbers or to verify identity).

Order Forms

Contact information from registration/order forms is used to ship purchases and/or information to our customers. This information may also be used to contact the customer about other products and services; however, this is not a frequent occurrence. Users may opt out of receiving future mailings. The Standards Council of Canada is committed to improving programs and services offered to its customers. Periodically, we conduct on-line surveys to collect data on customer satisfaction and other subjects. Our on-line surveys ask for contact information (like e-mail addresses). As part of our marketing programs, we occasionally host contests on our web site. Contest participants are asked to provide contact information (like e-mail addresses). This information is used to get in touch with the participant when necessary.

Involuntary Data

Web browsers connecting to web servers routinely reveal the IP address of your computer. We use your IP address to help diagnose problems with our server and to administer our web site.


A cookie is a file that may be placed on your hard drive without your knowledge by a web site to monitor your use of the site. Our web site uses cookies within our forums to store log-in information only. These cookies are temporary and are not stored on your local disk. They are discarded by your browser when it is shut down.


We sometimes accept advertisements from outside companies for display on our web site. These ads may contain cookies. Cookies received as part of an outside advertisement are collected by the advertising company. We do not have access to this information.

    This site has security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse and alteration of information under our control. We take all of the necessary precautions to safeguard customer information stored electronically. In all cases, information is retained in secure facilities, protected from unauthorized access is kept only as long as is reasonably required. Our electronic files are backed up for redundancy, password protected and accessible only by authorized employees, on a need-to-know basis.

    We use encryption technique to transmit your personal data to prevent the risk of the information being intercepted and read by a third party. This encryption technique ensures the highest level of security currently available in North America.

    The Customer Service Group is staffed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST, Monday - Friday. The following holidays typically are observed:

    Security, copyright and downloading PDF documents

    Standards delivered electronically in PDF format will contain security features and other restrictions in order to protect copyright. You will be required to install an Adobe Reader plug-in to activate the security features. PDF documents will be inaccessible until the plug-in is installed.

    You will be sent an email with instructions on how to download your PDF document(s) and obtain the plug-in. You will only have to install the plug-in once.

    Standards purchased online will be available for download up to 48 hours from the initial time of purchase. Should you miss this download window please contact IHS Canada directly for further assistance.

    Viewing Standards

    Viewing standards in PDF Format
    All standards delivered via the download option from StandardsStore.ca are saved in the Portable Document Format (PDF) with the .pdf extension. PDF is a universal standard for capturing and viewing documents in electronic form. Adobe Reader is a free program that you will need in order to view your PDF documents. The software is comptabile with several operating system platforms, including Windows, Solaris and MacIntosh.

    You can obtain, or upgrade, your PDF software by visiting Adobe online.

    If you experience compatiblity problems while trying to view your PDF document, you may have an older version of Adobe Reader installed. Upgrade your version, free of charge, from Adobe.

    Standards delivered in Winzip format
    Winzip may be used to compress PDF files (with the .zip extension) before standards are delivered to you electronically. Winzip is also used to extract PDF documents once the zipped file is delivered to you.

    You can obtain, or upgrade, your Winzip software by visiting Winzip online.


    Transactions are processed in US dollars


    The actual rate used by your credit card or bank may vary.
    Transactions are processed in CAD Dollars. Charges displayed in currencies other than CAD Dollars will be applied in CAD Dollars at the current rate of exchange. The final rate of exchange is applied by the creditor handling the transaction.
